Virtual reality headsets for children

Coming into hospital can be daunting or many, but for children it can be incredibly scary when they don’t understand what is going on or why.

Research has shown that distraction techniques can often work well with children who may be apprehensive about their visit to hospital and virtual reality can really help create a calming environment for them to immerse themselves in.

Hampshire Hospitals Charity has invested in state-of-the-art virtual reality headsets to help support those children who may be feeling anxiety during their hospital appointment. One mum of a young patient said: “He was able sit through the blood test with no tears or fears, this not only helped him get through the blood test but has changed the way he feels about blood tests and needles all together!”

Our fears as adults are often created and moulded in our early years and being able to help ensure children have a good experience of visiting hospital, helps them develop a good view of healthcare for later life.
